Fay Bluff

An Edward Hopper painting depicting a windswept shingled beach house was the inspiration for this Cape Cod summer retreat. The work of art set the tone for a new residence and gathering spot for an entire extended family; a place where memories are made in a wondrous seaside environment.

Settled on a private stretch of land along the shore of Vineyard Sound, Fay Bluff offers a sequence of spaces running parallel to the shoreline. Arriving through an automated wooden gate, the winding driveway leads to the very figurative form of two large gables connecting – as if in cursive – by a cresting bridge. The arc of the bridge was designed to echo the slope of the dunes on the edge of the property, providing a unique narrative element to an otherwise traditional gabled structure. Symbolically, it is a flourish that creates both visual and experiential excitement along the path to the grandchildren’s bunk- and playroom.
