Our Mid-Century Camp on Martha’s Vineyard has received a Professional Excellence Award at the 2026 SARA National Design Awards, the highest level of recognition presented by the Society of American Registered Architects.
Inspired by an 800-square-foot family camp constructed by hand in 1972, the new residence reinterprets the original retreat for contemporary, year-round living while preserving its modest character and longstanding family traditions. Set into the hillside, the home’s primary living spaces occupy the original camp’s location, while a vegetated roof, reclaimed materials, and native plantings integrate the architecture into the surrounding landscape.
The awards were presented at Hotel Marcel in New Haven, Connecticut, a fitting setting for a celebration of architecture. Originally designed by Marcel Breuer, the landmark Brutalist building has been thoughtfully adapted into a high-performance Passive House-certified hotel.
The recognition reflects the collective efforts of Hutker Architects’ architecture and interior design teams, along with the builders, consultants, and craftspeople who contributed to the project.
