This summer, we’re proud to welcome five talented interns to our team across three Hutker offices. Representing a range of schools, experiences, and hometowns, these emerging professionals bring curiosity, creativity, and fresh perspectives to our work.
At Hutker, we believe in cultivating the next generation of design leaders by offering meaningful, hands-on experiences in a collaborative studio environment. Our internship program connects students with practicing architects and designers, helping them build critical skills while contributing to real-world projects.
This year’s cohort includes:
Chris Forwood
Wilmington, DE
Chris’s internship began with hands-on experience on a home in Weston, where he joined design meetings, prepped for client presentations, and received daily feedback from the team. He later shifted to a smaller project with a different team, gaining a new perspective on design approaches. He appreciated the close-knit feel of the Martha’s Vineyard office, which reminded him of his studio at the University of Miami. As his internship wraps up, Chris is preparing to study abroad in Italy this fall.
I really enjoyed getting to know everyone and seeing how each person contributed to the firm. It was rewarding to learn the organized workflow that brought all the individual efforts together to create something meaningful.Chris Forwood
Nevah Fitzgerald
Oak Bluffs, MA
Nevah, a junior at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, joined the team at our Martha’s Vineyard office to explore a possible future in architecture, engineering, or interior design. She created site diagrams and SketchUp animations for Vineyard projects and joined architects on site visits, where she was fascinated to learn how every detail contributes to a finished home. While her high school architecture class introduced her to design tools, the internship gave her a clearer picture of the teamwork and creativity involved, and confirmed that this is a career path she wants to pursue.
During my internship, one of the best experiences was joining the architects on site-visits. It was fascinating to see the homes in person and learn about unique design details I never would have noticed or fully appreciated otherwise. It made me even more excited about pursuing a future in design.Nevah Fitzgerald
Nicholas Johnson
Camden, ME
Nicholas developed an early interest in architecture working alongside his father, a residential architect. After admiring Hutker’s work for years, he was excited to join the team this summer at the Falmouth office. It was his first experience with 3D modeling using Revit, and he contributed to interior design, massing studies, sheet setup (including elevations, sections, and diagrams), and construction detailing. He found the environment highly collaborative, and being included in design meetings has given him valuable insights to carry into his final year at Dalhousie University.
My time at Hutker has been an incredible opportunity to grow as a student of architecture. It was a valuable experience to contribute to a diverse range of projects alongside such a collaborative and talented team of designers.Nicholas Johnson
Will Schiffer
Cotuit, MA
Now in his second summer with Hutker, Will supported the design team at our Plymouth office on a range of tasks for a Harwich residence. His work included developing the interior layout of a guest suite, assisting with a structural staircase solution, and researching trim selections throughout the home. He especially appreciated collaborating with the Hutker designers, who were approachable and willing to share what they’ve learned. The experience helped him connect classroom theory from Roger Williams University with real-world design practice.
One of the aspects of the internship that I enjoyed most was being part of a collaborative team where I felt supported and encouraged to contribute ideas. The creative freedom I was given made the work especially fulfilling, as I was able to explore my own design thinking while learning from experienced professionals. Will Schiffer
Zoe Whelan
Medfield, MA
This was Zoe’s first internship, and she says she found “the best place to be.” The design team at the Martha’s Vineyard office welcomed her into conversations and took time to teach her practical, relevant skills. She prepared presentation drawings, helped organize client meetings, and refined floor plans and elevations. Zoe especially enjoyed site visits. Seeing homes under construction and meeting clients in completed spaces gave her a well-rounded view of the full design process – knowledge she’ll carry back to Northeastern University this fall.
Every single moment was an invaluable learning opportunity. From SketchUp rendering and AutoCAD drawing to on-site knowledge, the team at Hutker was always happy to help me learn new tools and understand everything going on, for which I am so grateful.Zoe Whelan
We’re excited to be part of each intern’s professional journey and grateful for the energy they bring to our studios. Their work this summer supports our mission to design meaningful and lasting dwellings; it reminds us that mentoring the next generation is one of the most lasting contributions we can make.
If you’re a student or recent graduate interested in future opportunities, we’d love to hear from you.
