Hutker Architects is thrilled to share that our Back River project has been recognized with two 2021 industry awards: a luxe RED Best of the Rest award and 2021 Residential Design Architecture Awards for Custom Period, Contextual, or Vernacular House.
This Duxbury home, perched on a hill overlooking the tidal salt marshes, required unique solutions to achieve the homeowner’s desired program while speaking to the scale and vernacular of historic homes in the area. While its street facing side presents as a modest single-story home, the transparent main entry door begins to break with tradition, giving a glimpse of the experience inside – a rear wall is that is fully glazed on two stories, with panoramic views and a garden that opens onto a generous back lawn. The great room culminates in what is perhaps the home’s most striking feature – a cantilevered screen porch that extends 16’ over the pool terrace, enabling a single cube of lot coverage to serve as both shaded exterior space with unobstructed views, and also an interior space that feels as if it’s floating in the trees. Intentional terracing across the landscape creates gardens and varied zones for outdoor activity.
We are also pleased to announce that Back River is featured in the Summer 2021 issue of New England Home Magazine, a stunning editorial in New England Home, which is available here.
